CO-CURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES
In addition to those sports and games which might be said to form the staple of the physical activities of the School, there are also other activities which occupy the leisure time of the children. These include Music, Singing, Elocution, Debating, Quizzing, Photography and Indoor games. Opportunities are provided for Social Service, for learning the maintenance of Flower and Vegetable Gardens and for Excursions and Tours.
We at Laidlaw always strive to implant diverse skills and nurture them so as to make our students fully equiped to face the challenges in real life. Training children for debates and public speaking is an integral part of real life. Training children who show sptitude and interest are culled out and trained. Our Inter-House debates afford them with plenty of exposure to public speaking. Guided by our teachers, they are refined both in thought and in speech. Our Junior debates are meant for the middle grade students while our Senior debates,(which are, incidentally, extempore) cater to the higher class students. Besides this, we conduct an Inter-School Debate & Quiz annually, inviting various English Speaking schools from the Nilgiris.
Our participation in all Inter School debates both at the District and at National levels is a pointer to the panchant we have for the all round development of our children.
English continues to be the global language. Ability to speak in correct English with proper pronunciation and accent is indispensable. Our Inter-House English Elocution offers an Excellent oppertunity to the children to refine their oratory skills. Meticulous care is taken by the House Staff in checking and correcting their pronunciation. This fruitful exercise is of immense benefit, as our children use the English Language in a way that is internationally intelligible.
From speeches to plays, the pupils were asked to focus on three aspects of elocution – memory, pronunciation, and presentation. The majority of the pupils were highly talented in the first and second skills, but some found the performance aspect rather challenging. Thus, it was The Seniors that displayed maturity beyond their years, with performances ranging from The Death speech in Joan of Ark to Gandhi’s outcry for the destruction of all nuclear weapons. Overall, the judges were highly impressed by the pupils that were able to capture both the spirit and the soul of their chosen subject. It was the sense of passion, entwined with clarity and cohesion, that led to the eventual victorious performers.
The Drama competition conducted in the month of October is a very important competition that involves a lot of thought and work on the part of the house staff and students.
Preparation for this competition begins in the month of July and proceeds for four months. Plays and actors to be chosen, stage settings to be arranged, parts to be memorized and acted, acting to be polished systematically, rehearsals to be seen and heard, drama teams to be formed—Work, Discussions, Pressure, Heart Aches, Anger, Frustration, Solutions, Raised Voices, Hushed Tones, Fun, Laughter, Joy, Contentment, characterize the work involved for the drama competition.
Pleasure and pain; exhaustion and relief coupled with the contentment of a work done to the best of each person’s ability comes to it’s grand finale on November every year.
Parents and visitors view this competition with pleasure and
appreciation.
